October 2008,  Autumn in the Valley

Press Release:
October's show at the working studio of Brown
& Curtis gallery is titled Autumn in the Valley
and features guest artist, Wanda Pépin from
the Applegate Valley area. Pépin's technique
is to layer vibrant acrylic paint to create
tangible texture in her nature studies. Using a
palette knife, she brings falling leaves, a
cluster of blossoms or twisted tree bark to life.
Many mornings finds her standing before her
easel, painting a leaf or bark she has found
along a path, using the natural light that floods
into her studio. The walls of her home are alive
with colorful fall foliage, branches, and lots
and lots of texture.
Pépin is an internationally collected artist with
paintings in Cyprus, Australia, England,
Greece and Mexico just to name a few. She
finds painting fulfilling and expressive. "I totally
lose track of time, going right inside the work."
she said.
The studio gallery is located at 40 N Main St
(in the Claycomb Mall), 541-538-9243. The
hours are Thurs - Sat 11-6. Sun 11-5.  First
Friday is on Oct 3, 5-8 pm. Come by and meet

Press Release:
The Defragmentation of an
Artist's Mind
Octavia's Haze Gallery is
premiering Wanda Johnson's
(Pépin) new series, "Floralies," inspired by an
all too familiar tale of a computer being
overloaded by spam, pop-ups, downloads, etc.
which prompted the need for deleting and
defragmenting. While anxiously awaiting the
defragmenting process to finish, Johnson's
mind began to wander to peaceful places far
away. Her creative mind took her to a floral
meadow which she began to mentally fragment
into tiles. Each 12 x 12 painting is a fragment
of the whole and when shown together, the
series gives the viewer the impression of a
large meadow completely filled with colorful
flowers. The background is also broken up
into small tiles which once again bring the
viewer back into a virtually fragmented world.
The intent of the series is to engage the
viewer from a distance and close up, all the
while, suggesting the connection between the
virtual world and nature.
In a time when human connections to nature
are fragmented by the pressures of work,
urban life, and keeping up "with the Joneses",
Johnson's work endeavors to revitalize that
human/nature connection. For the artist,
creating the work is in itself a lesson in the
connection possible between the human mind
and the natural world. In the space she finds
between the two, is a simple sense of awe in
the beauty of creation that surrounds us, if we
only take notice. (continued on next column)
                Johnson's (Pépin)
                paintings need to
                be experienced
                firsthand as they are so
tactically inspiring. She uses thick
vibrant acrylic paint applied with a
palette knife to create colorful, highly
textured works with a sculptured like
effect.  She uses her gift as a vehicle to
communicate the wonders of nature..
Growing up in a small town in Northern
California, Johnson's appreciation of
nature's beauty began to be nurtured.
At a young age she began to express
this love of nature in her paintings.
Through- out the years, she continued
to self study while pursuing a successful
career first in desktop publishing,
graphic arts and then later as a product
manager for a large corporation in
marketing. After several years in
product marketing, Johnson began to
pursue her career as a painter, living
and working in the Silicon Valley. She
has fine tuned her style and the
technique she uses is recognized as
uniquely her own.
